Movies With Great Surround Sound On Netflix Canada

So you just got your new surround sound home theatre system hooked up and you’re ready to test it out. What’s the first thing you put on? If you have a collection of Blu-ray movies you’re sure to find great surround sound there, but what about those of us who stream our content from Netflix? Surround sound may be a bit tough to find on Netflix, but there are many great titles that support it that are available to stream.

Note: Netflix viewed through your computer browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc) does not support surround sound. To get surround sound when streaming on your computer be sure to download the Netflix Desktop Apps. If you are viewing Netflix through an app on your Smart TV, streaming box, or game console surround sound should be supported. If you have an older TV, you may have surround sound passthrough issues depending on your setup. 2020 Update

It’s once again time to update our list as Netflix is constantly adding new titles to its catalogue. What’s more, is it seems almost all movies and shows on Netflix are now showing as 5.1 compatible, though that may be from Netflix itself resampling stereo into 5.1. That being said, here are some top picks for Netflix Canada in 2020 that have great surround sound!

Ready Player One
Ask anyone on a home theatre forum what their recent favourite movie is, and Ready Player One is almost always at the top of the list. An incredible surround sound track backs this movie about a battle for control of a virtual reality. A must watch for anyone with a surround sound system at home!

Hacksaw Ridge
Directed by Mel Gibson and starring Vince Vaughn, Hacksaw Ridge is the story of an army medic in World War 2 who becomes a hero on the Okinawa battlefield during one of the wars bloodiest battles.

6 Underground
This one will give your subwoofer a work out. Canadian Ryan Reynolds puts away the red tights and stars as a tech billionaire who fakes his death and recruits a team of international operatives for a mission to take down a dictator.

Deepwater Horizon
Deepwater Horizon is a dramatization of the 2010 BP oil spill catastrophe that chronicles the 12 hours leading up to the man made disaster. This movie is another favourite of home theatre enthusiasts.

2019 Update

It seems that Netflix is adding and removing titles daily from its catalogue, so we’ve decided up update our list. This is current as of January 2019. If you see a title that’s no longer available or come across a Netflix movie with great surround sound that’s not on our list, let us know in the comments below!

A Quiet Place
It may be ironic to have a horror movie about having to be quiet on a list of movies with great surround sound, but this horror hit from 2018 is one you won’t want to miss. You’ll want to make sure your rear surround speakers are set up properly so you can hear every sound as every twig snap could lead to a critical moment.

Underworld: Blood Wars
Kate Beckinsale is back with black leather & a lot of bullets in the 2016’s Underworld:Blood Wars. The effects are full of the kind of firefights that make owning a surround sound system worthwhile.

Avengers: Infinity War
If you are one of the few people who haven’t seen Infinity War yet, check it out before it leaves Netflix. This movie is the culmination of the 20 film Marvel cinematic universe, and the surround sound effects are incredible. If you haven’t seen any of the cinematic universe, there are mainly 6 films you’d want to watch to understand Infinity War, they are: “Iron Man”, “The Avengers”, “Avengers: Age Of Ultron”, “Guardians Of The Galaxy”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and “Thor: Ragnarok”. You didn’t have any plans this weekend anyways, right?

Solo: A Star Wars Story
Whether you love or hate the idea of a Han Solo origin prequel movie, you can’t deny that the sound effects & score of each Star Wars movie have been cutting edge, with Solo being no exception. Who doesn’t want to hear the Millenium Falcon whizzing around the room with their 5.1 surround sound system?

Annihilation
Sci-Fi Horror flick Annihilation took many viewers by surprise in 2018. The movie acheived muc critical acclaim, and even made Barack Obama’s list of favourite movies for 2018. Starring Natalie Portman, Annihilation starts with a small meteor containing Alien DNA crashing into Earth, setting into motion the events of the film. It’s best if you don’t go into the movie knowing too much, but we can tell you the atmospheric effects sound incredible in 5.1!

James Cameron’s epic film has been the “go-to” test for surround sound systems for decades. The opening battle scene will let you know if your system has been properly configured. This version has also been mastered for 4K!

John Wick

Starring Canadian Keanu Reeves, John Wick is one of the great modern action movies. Its use of surround sound throughout is excellent, and a great way to demo your system.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring

Peter Jackson’s award-winning trilogy has too many great uses of surround sound to mention each individually. That being said, the prologue scene showing the battle with Sauron where his finger gets cut off is full of Low-Frequency Effects, and a great way to demo your surround sound system.  Be sure to have enough popcorn ready to marathon all 3 movies!

Doctor Strange

While mostly known for its incredible visuals, Marvel’s Doctor Strange also has great sound effects throughout. The blend of the cinematic score with the magic effects in the battle scenes make this a treat to listen to with a proper surround sound system.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2016, Rogue One is the first stand-alone Star Wars film, taking place before Episode IV A New Hope. From blaster battles to ships whizzing around your room, Rogue One will make great use of your surround sound system.

King Kong (2005)

The newest adaptation of the story of a giant Gorilla with a giant heart actually won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2005. The end scene with King Kong scaling the iconic Empire State Building with fighter jets in pursuit will have you fully immersed in the action.
